Consultation and Feedback

Working with the community is at the heart of what we do, and by listening to those who know the area best, we can create a new neighbourhood for everyone to enjoy.

We have sought to take the community on every step of the journey and your feedback has been essential in getting to where we are today, through the shaping of our proposals.

During the consultation process, we made sure that the following goals were met:

  • Early and extensive engagement with the community and our key stakeholders
  • Collaboration with the local community on our Engagement Strategy, allowing input from residents on how they would like to be consulted, and which areas they wished to discuss in greater depth
  • Regular presentations and site visits to community groups and stakeholders
  • 5 engagement booklets, distributed to thousands of local households to inform residents about the proposals and advertise consultation events
  • Several pop-up events in 2021 and 2022 to present proposals and gather feedback
  • Design workshops and webinars
  • 2 days of site tours for the Open House festival
  • A dedicated consultation website for FAQs and up-to-date information
  • Specific engagement on the plans for interim community uses on the site, culminating in a Peace and Wellness Festival on the site, attended by over 300 people
  • Additional outreach led by the Bridge Renewal Trust’s link workers to reach out to Somali, West African, Caribbean, Turkish, Kurdish, and Eastern European communities in the area
  • A project specific email address to contact the development team and Freepost address service

Catalyst and Hill have created a ‘Statement of Community Involvement’, which has been submitted as part of the planning application, explaining how we have and will continue to involve the community in the creation of St Ann’s new neighbourhood. The proposals have been shaped by local feedback, including:

  1. Reducing the footprint of some buildings to frame and celebrate important trees whilst providing new public open spaces across the site

  2. The positioning and location of taller buildings across the site, focussed away from sensitive hospital buildings, key heritage assets, views from the Conservation Area and existing homes on Warwick Gardens

  3. Introducing a new open space around existing trees on the western boundary, breaking up the row of terraces on the North-West boundary of the site

  4. Refining our ideas for the ground floor uses on the site, including a café; workspace for local creatives and businesses; and space for other uses that will benefit the local community

  5. Improving our approach to the proposed houses, with the form stepped back on upper floors to reduce the impact of the houses on adjacent neighbours

  6. Fine-tuning the detailed design approach to the proposed houses (position, design, elevations) within Phase 1a and the outline element to sensitively respond to the Conservation Area, surrounding homes to the west of the Site and the Hospital to the east

  7. A more comprehensive approach to the Southwest access link between the Site and Warwick Gardens / Stanhope Gardens which now forms part of the detailed application.
